Why it could benefit going forward
- Optical interconnect is becoming a bigger AI datacenter constraint as cluster size and bandwidth rise.
- Lumentum adds exposure to the photonics layer rather than just the switch or accelerator.
- That makes it useful if the next wave of AI bottlenecks shifts from compute to connectivity and optics.
Moat / edge
- Photonics and optical-component expertise in a demanding market.
- Positioning in a layer of the stack that becomes harder to ignore as systems scale.
- Strategic relevance if large AI platforms push harder into optical networking.
What to watch
- Cloud and AI optics demand versus telecom weakness.
- Product mix and margin recovery.
- How quickly optical buildouts become material in AI infrastructure.
Key risks
- Optics can still be timing-sensitive and program-dependent.
- The company has other end markets that can muddy the AI signal.
